Andy Warhol Collaborator Bob Colacello to Show 150 Vintage Photographs in New Exhibition

‘Andy at the Hotel Bristol, Bonn,’ 1976.  Vito Schnabel

The New York-based Vito Schnabel Projects will showcase 150 vintage prints in an upcoming exhibition, Pictures From Another Time: Photographs by Bob Colacello, 1976 – 82, presenting images taken during the time that Colacello served as editor of Andy Warhol’s Interview magazine. In addition to his role as editor, Colacello also joined Warhol on a number of European excursions, allowing him to capture rare moments in the artist’s life.

Pictures From Another Time features photos taken on Colacello’s Minox 35 EL, the first miniature camera capable of taking full-frame 35mm photographs (he eventually replaced it with an even smaller Canon device). The nature of his job in media, coupled with Warhol’s esteemed stature, exposed Colacello to several high-profile engagements and settings with movie stars, politicians and designers alike finding themselves behind his lens. Among his works, Bianca Jagger, Cher and John Paul Getty III make cameos in the black-and-white portraits.

Colacello’s penchant for catching candid shots is reflected in the likes of off-kilter angles and half-visible figures. As a whole, the chosen pieces in the installation echo the “societal fluidity and social mobility of ‘the Me Decade,’ an era of emerging liberation movements in American culture.” From princesses to popstars, the essence of the ’70s lives on in Colacello’s unique snapshots. Pictures From Another Time: Photographs by Bob Colacello, 1976 – 82 will be on view at Vito Schnabel Projects from May 3 until June 21, 2019.
